A licensed practitioner who uses hands-on techniques to relieve pain, reduce stress, and support recovery.
What massage therapists do
Massage therapists consult with clients, deliver Swedish, deep tissue, sports, prenatal, and other modalities, recommend self care, and document sessions. They tailor pressure and technique to client goals such as relaxation, pain relief, or athletic recovery.
Training path
US massage therapists complete a state-approved program of 500 to 1,000 hours covering anatomy, technique, ethics, and business. They earn the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination or a state-specific exam. Continuing education in modalities is required to renew licenses.
Settings
Massage therapists work in destination and day spas, chiropractic and physical therapy clinics, sports teams, hospitals offering integrative care, hotels, on cruise ships, and in private practice serving regular clients.
