A fitness professional who designs and coaches workout programs for individuals or small groups.
What personal trainers do
Personal trainers assess fitness, set goals, design exercise programs, coach clients through sessions, and adjust plans based on progress. Many also offer nutritional guidance, lifestyle coaching, and accountability between sessions through apps and check-ins.
Training path
Most US personal trainers hold certifications from organizations such as NSCA, ACSM, NASM, and ACE. Many also hold bachelor’s degrees in exercise science or kinesiology. CPR and first-aid certification is universal.
Settings
Personal trainers work in commercial gyms, boutique studios, country clubs, corporate wellness programs, in-home services, online coaching platforms, and as independent contractors building their own client base on social media.
