A licensed practitioner who diagnoses and treats musculoskeletal complaints using spinal manipulation and adjunct therapies.
What chiropractors do
Chiropractors evaluate spinal alignment, joint mobility, and muscle function, then deliver manual adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and exercise programs. They often treat low back pain, neck pain, and headaches, and counsel patients on posture and ergonomics.
Training path
US chiropractors complete a four-year Doctor of Chiropractic program after at least three years of undergraduate science coursework. They pass national board examinations and obtain a state license.
Practice scope
Chiropractic scope varies by state and may include nutritional counseling, rehabilitation exercise, and adjunct modalities such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound. Chiropractors do not prescribe medication or perform surgery.
