An engineer who designs and tests mechanical systems, from engines and HVAC to medical devices and robotics.
What mechanical engineers do
Mechanical engineers design engines, turbines, compressors, HVAC systems, robots, vehicles, and consumer products. They simulate stress and flow, build prototypes, run tests, work with manufacturing, and resolve field failures. They also support reliability and safety analyses.
Training path
Most US mechanical engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Those who stamp drawings or perform consulting work earn a Professional Engineer license through the FE exam, four years of experience, and the PE exam.
Industries
Mechanical engineers work in automotive, aerospace, energy, HVAC, medical devices, consumer products, semiconductor equipment, robotics, defense, and a wide range of manufacturing and process industries.
