A skilled tradesperson who installs ceramic, porcelain, and stone tile on floors, walls, and countertops.
What tilers do
Tilers prepare substrates, snap layout lines, cut tiles to fit, set them in thinset mortar, and grout the joints. They install kitchen backsplashes, bathroom surrounds, shower pans, lobby floors, swimming pool linings, and exterior cladding.
Training path
Most US tilers learn through apprenticeship with the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers or through on-the-job training under experienced installers. Manufacturer schools and certifications from the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation validate skills.
Specializations
Specializations include residential remodeling, large-format porcelain panels, natural stone slabs, mosaic art installation, and waterproof shower systems requiring detailed flashing and slope work.
