Floor Installer

Filter:

A tradesperson who installs hardwood, laminate, vinyl, carpet, and tile flooring in homes and commercial spaces.

What floor installers do

Floor installers tear out old flooring, level subfloors, and install hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, luxury vinyl plank, sheet vinyl, carpet, or rubber. They cut around obstacles, install transitions, and finish with baseboards or trim.

Training path

Most US floor installers learn on the job as helpers. Some complete two- to three-year apprenticeships through the Carpenters union or manufacturer certification programs. The Certified Flooring Installer credential from CFI validates skills.

Specializations

Specializations include hardwood and engineered wood, resilient sheet and tile, carpet stretch-in and direct-glue, commercial heat-welded vinyl for healthcare, sports surfaces, and decorative concrete polishing.
