What fashion designers do
Fashion designers research trends and references, sketch collections, drape and pattern garments, select fabrics and trims, supervise sample making, and ship product. They work seasonally, presenting at trade shows or fashion weeks and managing production timelines.
Training path
Most US fashion designers hold a bachelor’s degree from schools such as Parsons, FIT, RISD, or Pratt. Internships at major houses and assistant positions are critical entry points. Some self-launch independent labels supported by direct-to-consumer e-commerce.
Settings
Fashion designers work for ready-to-wear brands, luxury fashion houses, mass-market retailers, athletic and outdoor brands, denim labels, swim and intimates companies, and bridal salons. Many run their own studios producing limited runs.
