Boilermaker

Filter:

A skilled tradesperson who builds, repairs, and installs boilers, pressure vessels, and large industrial tanks.

What boilermakers do

Boilermakers fabricate and assemble boilers, tanks, vats, and pressure vessels at fabrication shops, then install and repair them at power plants, refineries, breweries, and ships. They cut and shape thick steel plate, weld seams, and inspect finished work for leaks.

Most US boilermakers complete a four- to five-year apprenticeship through the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, combining paid work with classroom instruction on welding, rigging, and pressure vessel codes.

Settings

Boilermakers work for general contractors during plant outages, shipyards building Navy vessels, refineries and chemical plants on shutdown crews, brewery and distillery fabricators, and original equipment manufacturers.
