A coffee professional who prepares espresso drinks, brewed coffee, and tea in cafes and restaurants.
What baristas do
Baristas pull espresso shots, steam milk, brew pour-over and drip coffee, take orders, ring transactions, and keep equipment and the bar clean. Specialty baristas educate customers on origins, brew methods, and flavor profiles, and may also operate roasters and brew bars.
Training path
Most US baristas learn on the job. The Specialty Coffee Association offers certifications in barista skills, brewing, roasting, sensory evaluation, and green coffee. Competitions such as the United States Barista Championship recognize technical excellence.
Settings
Baristas work at independent and chain coffee shops, hotel and restaurant cafes, bakeries, mobile coffee carts, kiosks at offices and universities, and specialty roasters operating their own brew bars.
