A hospitality professional who mixes and serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in bars, restaurants, and events.
What bartenders do
Bartenders take orders, mix cocktails, pour beer and wine, manage cash and credit transactions, and engage with guests at the bar. Many also build cocktail menus, manage inventory, train staff, and run service operations during shifts.
Training path
Many US bartenders learn on the job after starting as barbacks or servers. Some attend bartending schools or workshops on classic and craft cocktails. Responsible alcohol service training such as TIPS or ServSafe Alcohol is required in many jurisdictions.
Settings
Bartenders work in dive bars, cocktail lounges, restaurants, hotel bars, nightclubs, sports bars, wineries, breweries, distilleries, and on cruise ships and at private events. Bar managers and beverage directors oversee programs at restaurant groups.
