What welders do
Welders interpret blueprints, prepare metal edges, and join components using shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc, flux-cored, or oxy-fuel processes. They work on structural steel, pressure vessels, pipelines, vehicles, machinery, and artistic pieces.
Training path
Many US welders attend a six- to eighteen-month trade school program followed by on-the-job experience and process-specific certifications such as those from the American Welding Society. Apprenticeships and military training are alternative pathways.
Specializations
Specializations include structural steel, pipeline, pressure vessel, underwater, aerospace, automotive, and ornamental welding. Certified welding inspectors and welding engineers oversee quality and codes.
