What network engineers do
Network engineers design wired and wireless networks, configure routers, switches, and firewalls, monitor traffic, and respond to outages. They size links to support business needs, segment networks for security, and integrate cloud connectivity with on-premises infrastructure.
Training path
Most US network engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in computer networking or information technology. Many earn Cisco CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE certifications, or vendor-specific credentials from Juniper, Arista, Palo Alto, and others.
Settings
Network engineers work for enterprises, internet service providers, cloud providers, telecom carriers, managed service providers, and government agencies. Some specialize in voice, wireless, security, or data center fabric design.
