An engineer who designs and operates systems that harness nuclear energy for power, medicine, and defense.
What nuclear engineers do
Nuclear engineers design reactor cores, fuel cycles, and safety systems for power plants and naval propulsion. They develop radiation shielding for medical and industrial applications, manage radioactive materials, and respond to plant operations issues.
Training path
Most US nuclear engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, with many specialists pursuing graduate work. Industry credentialing includes the Nuclear Regulatory Commission senior reactor operator license for plant operators.
Industries
Nuclear engineers work at nuclear utilities operating power plants, vendors such as Westinghouse and GE Hitachi, national laboratories, the Navy, regulatory agencies including the NRC, medical centers running radiation therapy, and emerging small modular reactor companies.
