Notary

Filter:

A state-authorized official who witnesses signatures, administers oaths, and certifies documents to deter fraud.

What notaries do

Notaries verify the identity of signers, witness signatures on deeds, powers of attorney, and affidavits, administer oaths and affirmations, and certify copies where authorized. They maintain a journal of notarial acts and apply an official seal to documents.

Training path

US notaries are commissioned by their state, typically after completing a short education course, passing a brief exam where required, and posting a bond. Commissions last four to ten years depending on the state.

Settings

Notaries work in banks, title companies, law offices, government agencies, hospitals, shipping stores, and as mobile notaries traveling to clients. Many states authorize remote online notarization, allowing video-based services.
