An engineer who designs processes and equipment that convert raw materials into chemicals, fuels, and materials.
What chemical engineers do
Chemical engineers design reactors, separation units, heat exchangers, and piping for plants that produce chemicals, fuels, pharmaceuticals, foods, and consumer products. They model mass and energy balances, optimize processes, and lead safety reviews.
Training path
Most US chemical engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. Senior plant and consulting roles often require a Professional Engineer license. Many engineers in pharmaceutical and biotech industries also hold graduate degrees.
Industries
Chemical engineers work in oil refining, petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, biotech, food processing, semiconductor fabrication, environmental engineering, and renewable energy production.
