What industrial mechanics do
Industrial mechanics, also called millwrights, install and align machinery, replace bearings and seals, rebuild pumps and gearboxes, troubleshoot hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and respond to breakdowns that halt production. They keep factories running on tight schedules.
Training path
Most US industrial mechanics complete a four-year millwright apprenticeship through the Carpenters union or a similar program, combining paid work with classroom hours. Two-year technical programs in industrial maintenance are an alternative path.
Settings
Industrial mechanics work in auto plants, food and beverage facilities, refineries, chemical plants, paper mills, steel mills, mines, and water treatment plants. Some travel to install new equipment for manufacturers.
