Investment Banker

Filter:

A finance professional who advises companies on raising capital, mergers, and acquisitions.

What investment bankers do

Investment bankers advise companies on mergers and acquisitions, take companies public through IPOs, raise capital through bond and equity offerings, and structure restructurings. They build valuation models, draft pitch books, manage diligence processes, and negotiate transactions.

Training path

Most US investment bankers start with a bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, or related fields from target universities, joining as analysts. After two to three years, many earn MBAs at top business schools before returning as associates. Senior bankers rise to vice president, director, and managing director.

Settings

Investment bankers work at bulge bracket firms such as Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, elite boutiques such as Centerview and Evercore, middle-market and regional banks, and corporate development teams at large companies handling M&A in-house.
