What occupational therapists do

Training path

US occupational therapists earn a master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited program, complete fieldwork, and pass the NBCOT certification examination. State licensure is required, and many specialize in pediatric, hand, mental health, or driving rehabilitation.

Settings

Occupational therapists work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, early intervention programs, skilled nursing, mental health facilities, ergonomics consulting, and home health, often partnering with physical and speech therapists.
