Emergency Dispatcher

Filter:

A 911 telecommunicator who answers emergency calls and coordinates police, fire, and medical response.

What emergency dispatchers do

Emergency dispatchers answer 911 calls, gather critical information, and assign responders. They coach callers through CPR and bleeding control, manage multi-agency incidents, and track unit status in real time. They are the calm voice during the worst moments of a caller’s life.

Training path

Most US dispatchers complete an agency-run dispatch academy covering call handling, emergency medical dispatch, fire dispatch, and law enforcement procedures. National certifications from organizations such as APCO and the IAED validate skills.

Settings

Dispatchers work in city, county, and regional public safety answering points (PSAPs), state highway patrol dispatch centers, hospital communications, ambulance services, university and transit police, and the US Coast Guard.
