Embedded Systems Engineer

Filter:

An engineer who develops software and firmware that runs directly on hardware devices.

What embedded systems engineers do

Embedded engineers write firmware for microcontrollers and microprocessors that power cars, appliances, medical devices, drones, and industrial controllers. They wire peripherals, implement communication protocols, optimize for memory and power, and run signals through oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.

Training path

Most US embedded engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. Coursework in operating systems, signals and systems, and microcontrollers prepares engineers for the role, complemented by hobby projects on Arduino, STM32, or ESP boards.

Industries

Embedded engineers work in automotive, aerospace and defense, medical devices, consumer electronics, industrial automation, robotics, and the Internet of Things, often serving safety-critical regulatory environments.
