Dancing Queen

Filter:

A 1976 ABBA single in disco-pop style, written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson, describing a young woman on a Friday night.

Composition

Dancing Queen was written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson. The piano-driven arrangement layers two female lead vocals by Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad over a brisk disco rhythm.

Reception

The single was premiered in 1976 at a televised gala for the wedding of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. It reached number one in over a dozen countries and became ABBA’s only number-one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Legacy

Dancing Queen is the centerpiece number of the stage musical and film “Mamma Mia!” and remains the song most associated with the ABBA catalog. The Swedish group reunited in 2021 to record new material after a four-decade hiatus.
