Day Tripper

Filter:

A 1965 Beatles single built on a riff by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, released as a double A-side with "We Can Work It Out."

Composition

Day Tripper is built around an electric guitar riff credited principally to John Lennon, with contributions from Paul McCartney. Lennon later described the song as being a slightly disguised reference to part-time commitment to counterculture.

Recording

The band recorded the track at EMI Studios in October 1965. The song uses a doubled guitar and bass riff and a dramatic build during the bridge, with Ringo Starr’s tambourine and drums propelling the rhythm.

Reception

Released in December 1965 as a double A-side single with “We Can Work It Out,” the record reached number one in the UK and the United States. It became a frequent feature of Beatles concert sets during their final tours.
