A 1999 alternative rock single by Incubus, a downtempo guitar ballad about anxiety and forward motion despite uncertainty.
Composition
Drive was written by Incubus vocalist Brandon Boyd. The arrangement opens with an acoustic guitar pattern by Mike Einziger and gradually builds to a fuller arrangement that closes the song.
Reception
Released as the third single from “Make Yourself,” Drive reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in 2001. It became Incubus’s first single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 and remains their highest charting song.
Legacy
Drive is among the most widely recognized U.S. alternative rock singles of the early 2000s, regularly programmed on radio. The acoustic-driven arrangement helped expand the band’s reach beyond the harder textures of their earlier records.
