Paul McCartney composed Yesterday from a melody he later reported having dreamed. Working title “Scrambled Eggs” served as placeholder lyrics until the final words were written for the 1965 album “Help!”

The recording features McCartney on lead vocal and acoustic guitar accompanied by a string quartet arrangement scored by George Martin. No other Beatles member performed on the released track.

Released as a single in the United States in September 1965, Yesterday reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It has been covered by an estimated 1,600 to 3,000 different artists, by various counts the most-covered song in popular music history.
