James Taylor recorded the song the same year for his album “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon” with King’s permission. His recording reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1971.
Reception
King and Taylor each won Grammy Awards at the 1972 ceremony for the song, with King winning Song of the Year and Taylor winning Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male. The song has been covered widely in folk, gospel, and pop traditions.
