Background

Born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky, he began boxing at 12 and won light heavyweight gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics before turning professional later that year.

Career

He won the world heavyweight title from Sonny Liston in 1964. He was stripped of his titles in 1967 for refusing US military service but regained the championship by defeating George Foreman in Kinshasa in 1974. He retired in 1981 and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1984.

Style of play

Known for the “Ali Shuffle” footwork and a “rope-a-dope” defensive strategy, Ali combined hand speed and reflexes with the ability to absorb punishment and counter late in fights.
