Background
Born Arthur Antunes Coimbra in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Zico joined Flamengo’s youth setup at age 14 and made his senior debut in 1971.
Career
He spent most of his career at Flamengo, winning the 1981 Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup, then played briefly in Italy with Udinese and in Japan with Kashima Antlers. He scored 48 goals in 71 matches for Brazil.
Style of play
A central attacking midfielder with exceptional dead-ball technique and short-range vision, Zico was central to Brazil’s elegant but ultimately unsuccessful 1982 World Cup squad.
