A 2012 looter shooter by Gearbox Software in which four Vault Hunters return to Pandora to defeat the smug Hyperion CEO Handsome Jack and free the planet.
Concept
Borderlands 2 expanded the procedural loot system of the original, layering Handsome Jack’s villainy over four-player cooperative gunplay. Each Vault Hunter brings a distinct skill tree and action skill.
Writing
Anthony Burch wrote a steady stream of comedy, satire, and earned emotional beats. Tiny Tina, Mr. Torgue, and Krieg the Psycho became fan favorites who anchored later DLC.
Legacy
Borderlands 2 sold over 26 million copies and remains the franchise’s best-loved entry. Its 2014 spin-off Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, the sequel Borderlands 3, and the 2024 Borderlands 4 all built on its design.
