A 2012 Wii U launch platformer by Nintendo in which Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Mii avatars cross the Mushroom Kingdom to recover Princess Peach's castle from Bowser.
Setup
Bowser has hurled the heroes to a continent-spanning overworld map, and the player must cross nine worlds to confront him. Unlike previous New Super Mario Bros. titles, the world map is one giant scrollable area.
Gameplay
Up to four players cooperate locally, with one taking the Boost Mode role on the GamePad to place blocks and slow enemies. Flying Squirrel transformations and Yoshi babies expanded the toolkit.
Legacy
New Super Mario Bros. U sold over five million Wii U copies and became a Switch port called New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe in 2019. The Deluxe edition added Toadette and her Peachette transformation.
