A 1997 arcade football game by Midway Games featuring exaggerated seven-on-seven action, with no penalties for late hits or excessive aggression.
Concept
Designed by Mark Turmell, the same lead as NBA Jam, NFL Blitz stripped football down to its most arcade-friendly form. Late hits, jumping into the pile, and on-fire receiver streaks all encouraged maximum aggression.
Gameplay
Teams field seven players each, plays are selected from a four-tile menu, and the clock runs aggressively. The Brutal Mode option turned every defender into a punishing tackler.
Legacy
NFL Blitz spawned a long-running franchise that pivoted to home console releases through NFL Blitz: The League. EA Tiburon revived the brand digitally in 2012, retaining the arcade chaos of the original.
