A 2003 BioWare role-playing game set 4,000 years before the films, in which an amnesiac Jedi recruit hunts the rogue Sith Lord Darth Malak across the galaxy.
Setting
The Old Republic era let BioWare invent new planets, factions, and ancient Jedi lore without the constraints of the films. Players assemble a squad including Bastila Shan, Carth Onasi, the assassin droid HK-47, and the Wookiee Zaalbar.
Combat
Knights of the Old Republic uses turn-based mechanics with real-time animations, a design BioWare refined later in Jade Empire and the Mass Effect trilogy. Light side and dark side choices reshape ability progression.
Legacy
Knights of the Old Republic won a Game of the Year award in 2003 and became BioWare’s breakout western RPG. Its 2004 Obsidian-developed sequel and the 2011 MMO continued the same setting.
