A mountainous volcanic island of the Lesser Antilles known as the Nature Isle for its rainforests and rivers.
Geography
Dominica is the youngest and most volcanically active of the Lesser Antilles. Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 m, is the highest point. The island contains the world’s second-largest hot lake, Boiling Lake, in a flooded fumarole.
Wildlife
The dense rainforest hosts the endemic sisserou parrot, depicted on the national flag, as well as the rare red-necked amazon. Most of the interior is protected within Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Culture
The island contains the Kalinago Territory, the largest remaining indigenous Carib reserve in the Caribbean, governed by an elected chief.
