Volcanic island in French Polynesia famed for its turquoise lagoon and the central peaks of Mount Otemanu and Pahia.

Geography

Bora Bora is the eroded remnant of an extinct volcano surrounded by a coral reef and several small motu islets. Mount Otemanu, the highest peak, is a distinctive lava plug rising 727 m above the lagoon.

Tourism

The island is among the most internationally recognized destinations in the South Pacific. Over-water bungalows, first developed in French Polynesia in the 1960s, are now common in the resorts ringing the lagoon.

History

During World War II, the United States operated a supply base on the island known as Operation Bobcat. Wartime infrastructure including the airfield on Motu Mute remains in use.
