The easternmost island of the Caribbean, formed from uplifted coral on a tectonic accretionary prism.
Geography
Barbados lies about 160 km east of the main arc of the Lesser Antilles, set apart on its own oceanic ridge. Unlike its volcanic neighbors, the island is formed from limestone deposited atop a sedimentary core. Mount Hillaby is the highest point at 340 m.
Population
The island is among the most densely populated in the Americas. Bridgetown, on the southwest coast, is the capital and houses about a third of the country’s residents.
History
Barbados was a British colony from 1625 until independence in 1966. In 2021 it transitioned to a republic, removing the British monarch as head of state.
