Geography
Guam is roughly 50 km long and 6 to 19 km wide, with a limestone plateau in the north and volcanic hills in the south. Mount Lamlam, at 406 m, is the highest point above sea level but rises more than 11,000 m from the floor of the nearby Mariana Trench.
History
The indigenous Chamorro people have inhabited the island for at least 3,500 years. Spanish rule from 1668 to 1898 was followed by United States administration, briefly interrupted by Japanese occupation during World War II.
Strategic role
Guam hosts Andersen Air Force Base and Naval Base Guam, making it a key node in United States military operations in the western Pacific.
