Geography
Molokai was formed by two shield volcanoes that built east and west portions of the island. The north shore drops in sheer sea cliffs reaching 1,010 m, among the highest in the world, isolating the Kalaupapa Peninsula at their base.
Culture
Molokai has resisted large-scale tourism and is sometimes called the “Friendly Isle.” Many residents are of Native Hawaiian descent and the island retains a strong rural character with no buildings taller than a coconut tree.
Notable features
Kalaupapa National Historical Park preserves the site of the Hansen’s disease settlement led for years by Saint Damien. The longest fringing reef in the United States lies along the south coast.
