ISLANDS

Manhattan

Filter:

A narrow island at the mouth of the Hudson River, the most densely populated borough of New York City.

Geography

Manhattan is roughly 21 km long and at most 3.7 km wide. It is bordered by the Hudson River to the west, the East River to the east, and the Harlem River to the north. Bedrock of mica schist and gneiss close to the surface supports the island’s many skyscrapers.

Population

Manhattan is the most densely populated of the five New York City boroughs and one of the most densely populated places on Earth. Wall Street at its southern tip is a global financial center.

History

The Dutch established the trading post of New Amsterdam at the southern tip in 1626. Tradition holds that the entire island was purchased from the Lenape for goods worth roughly 60 guilders, though this account has been heavily contested.
