The second-largest of Spain's Balearic Islands, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993.
Geography
Menorca is the northeasternmost of the Balearic Islands, separated from Mallorca by a 35 km channel. The terrain is mostly low and rolling, with Monte Toro the highest point at 358 m, set roughly at the island’s center.
History
The island is dotted with Talayotic-era stone monuments, including talayots, taulas, and navetas, raised between roughly 1400 and 800 BCE. These structures earned a UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2023.
Population
Mahón, on a long natural harbor on the east coast, and Ciutadella on the west, are the main towns. Mahón gives its name to mahonnaise, the origin of the modern condiment.
