Kauai

Filter:

Oldest and northernmost of the main Hawaiian Islands, nicknamed the Garden Isle for its lush vegetation.

Geography

Kauai is the geologically oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands at roughly five million years. Erosion has carved Waimea Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and the rugged sea cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast.

Climate

Mount Waialeale near the island’s center is among the wettest places on Earth, receiving more than 11 m of rain annually. Most of the eastern interior is rainforest while leeward Poipu stays warm and dry.

Notable features

The Nā Pali Coast is accessible only by foot, sea, or air. Kauai’s interior is so remote that large stretches remain uninhabited and undeveloped.
