Lanai

Filter:

Smallest publicly accessible Hawaiian island, once the world's largest pineapple plantation and now privately owned.

Geography

Lanai is a single shield volcano now extinct and heavily eroded. The island has only one town, Lanai City, sitting at about 500 m elevation on the central plateau.

History

From 1922 to 1992 the Dole Food Company operated the world’s largest pineapple plantation here, supplying roughly three quarters of global production at its peak. In 2012, software billionaire Larry Ellison purchased 98 percent of the island.

Notable features

The Garden of the Gods is a rocky lunar landscape of red and orange rock formations. There are no traffic lights on Lanai and only about 50 km of paved road.
