An island east of New York City, the longest and largest island in the contiguous United States.
Geography
Long Island stretches roughly 190 km from the New York City waterfront east to Montauk Point. The terrain consists largely of glacial moraine deposited during the last ice age. The Harbor Hill Moraine forms the north shore, while the Ronkonkoma Moraine runs through the center.
Population
The western portion contains the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Nassau and Suffolk counties to the east are heavily suburban. In total, the island holds more than eight million people.
Geography
The South Fork at the eastern end contains the Hamptons, a string of beach resort communities, while the North Fork is known for wineries and farms.
