Geography
Lanzarote was reshaped by the 1730 to 1736 Timanfaya eruptions, the longest sustained volcanic event in recorded Canary Islands history. About a quarter of the island is now covered by ropy black lava fields and over 100 volcanic cones.
Wine
The lava fields of La Geria support a unique form of viticulture in which vines are grown in small hand-dug pits to capture moisture and shelter from wind. The Malvasía Volcánica wine produced here is unique to the island.
Culture
Local artist and architect César Manrique shaped much of the island’s modern character with low-rise traditional white architecture and works integrated with the volcanic landscape.
