An archipelago of more than 330 islands in Melanesia, of which roughly 110 are permanently inhabited.
Geography
Fiji’s two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, together account for about 87 percent of the country’s land area. Viti Levu hosts the capital Suva on the wet southeastern coast and the major tourism gateway of Nadi in the drier west.
Climate
The islands have a tropical maritime climate with a hot, wet season from November to April and a cooler, drier season from May to October. Tropical cyclones occur each year during the wet months.
Population
Roughly 57 percent of Fijians are iTaukei (indigenous Fijian) and 37 percent are Indo-Fijian, the descendants of indentured laborers brought from British India between 1879 and 1916.
