Faroe Islands

Filter:

A self-governing archipelago of 18 volcanic islands within the Kingdom of Denmark, midway between Scotland and Iceland.

Geography

The Faroe Islands are basalt remnants of an ancient volcanic plateau, with steep cliffs and narrow grassy ridges. Slættaratindur on Eysturoy is the highest point at 880 m. Tórshavn on Streymoy is the capital and one of the smallest in the world.

Climate

The maritime climate is cool, cloudy, and windy year-round. The Gulf Stream keeps winters mild for the latitude. There are virtually no trees as constant wind prevents natural growth.

Culture

Faroese, a North Germanic language closely related to Icelandic, is spoken alongside Danish. Traditional grass-roof houses remain a recognizable feature of the islands.
