Easter Island

Filter:

Remote volcanic Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific famous for its nearly 1,000 monumental moai statues.

Geography

Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui, lies roughly 3,500 km west of mainland Chile and 2,000 km east of Pitcairn, making it one of the most isolated inhabited islands on Earth. It is shaped by three extinct volcanoes whose craters form distinctive coastal landmarks.

Culture

The Rapa Nui people carved nearly 1,000 monolithic stone moai between roughly 1250 and 1500 CE. These figures, averaging four meters tall, were positioned on stone platforms called ahu, generally facing inland to watch over the community.

History

Polynesian voyagers settled the island around 1200 CE. Dutch admiral Jacob Roggeveen reached it on Easter Sunday 1722, giving the European name. Chile annexed the island in 1888.
