A Tyrrhenian island west of Tuscany, best known as the site of Napoleon Bonaparte's first exile.
Geography
Elba is the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago and the third-largest island of Italy after Sicily and Sardinia. The terrain is mountainous, with Monte Capanne reaching 1,019 m. Iron ore deposits, mined since Etruscan times, run through the eastern half.
History
Napoleon was exiled to Elba in May 1814 after his first abdication. He spent nine months there as the island’s sovereign before escaping in February 1815 to begin his Hundred Days campaign that ended at Waterloo.
Economy
Tourism is the main industry, supported by ferry connections from Piombino on the Tuscan mainland. Wine, particularly Aleatico, and seafood are local specialties.
