Geography
Maui consists of two volcanic shields — the older West Maui Mountains and the dormant Haleakalā in the east — connected by a low sandy plain. Haleakalā last erupted in the 17th century and its summit crater spans roughly 11 km.
Climate
Trade winds bring heavy rainfall to the windward east and north, while the leeward south and west remain sunny. The Road to Hana traces the wet eastern coast through rainforest, waterfalls, and black-sand beaches.
Notable features
Haleakalā National Park preserves the summit and the lush Kīpahulu rainforest. Lahaina, on the west coast, was the royal capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii before a devastating 2023 wildfire.
