Geography

Martinique is volcanic, with Mount Pelée at the northern end rising 1,397 m. The 1902 eruption of Pelée destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre in minutes, killing about 30,000 people in one of the deadliest volcanic disasters of the 20th century.

Politics

The island is an overseas region of France, fully integrated into the French Republic and the European Union. Residents are French citizens using the euro.

Culture

French is the official language and Martinican Creole is widely spoken. Fort-de-France is the capital and main port. Writer Aimé Césaire, a founder of the Négritude movement, served as the city’s mayor for 56 years.
