Geography

The Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO-listed mountain range, runs along the island’s northwest coast and contains Puig Major at 1,445 m. The southern and eastern coasts feature long stretches of beach and limestone cliffs.

Population

Palma de Mallorca, the capital, sits on the south coast and accounts for nearly half the population of the Balearic Islands. The city’s gothic cathedral of Santa Maria, built between 1229 and 1601, overlooks the harbor.

Economy

Tourism dominates, with the island receiving roughly 12 million visitors a year, primarily from Germany and the United Kingdom. Agriculture historically focused on olives, almonds, and wine.
