The second-largest of the Canary Islands and the closest to the African mainland, known for long sandy beaches.
Geography
Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands at roughly 20 million years, and erosion has worn its volcanic peaks into a low arid landscape. Pico de la Zarza at 807 m is the highest point. The island lies just under 100 km from the Moroccan coast.
Climate
The island is hot, dry, and consistently windy, with average annual rainfall under 150 mm. The constant trade winds make it a major destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Wildlife
Fuerteventura is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The endemic Canarian houbara bustard and the Egyptian vulture are found in the arid interior.
